While Luigi Cherubini’s Médée focusses on the drama of the title character and Pascal Dusapin’s opera Medeamaterial is swept along by Medea’s inner monologue, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s cinematic treatment of the story highlights the gulf between incompatible worlds. The clash of two different cultures is shown as a bloody tragedy. Maria Callas plays the proud and desperate Medea against the backdrop of a life experienced in exile.
