Sven-Eric Bechtolf had planned a wide-ranging straight drama repertoire already in 2012, including Kleist’s Prinz Friedrich von Homburg staged by Andrea Breth, or Irina Brook’s interpretation of Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, and Händl Klaus’s ‘musical play’ Meine Bienen. Eine Schneise/My Bees. A Swath performed by Musicbanda Franui in its world première.

In 2013, the head of drama turned his attention to the Jedermann production, now eleven years old, and commissioned Brian Mertes and Julian Crouch to produce it anew. Inspired by the mystery play and harking back to the Festival founders, they succeeded in an interpretation reflecting the simplicity and immediacy of the play without neglecting its fundamental questions. The procession of the ensemble from the Festival Hall to Domplatz/Cathedral Square was a unique and moving homage to Max Reinhardt: the whole city is a stage. Cornelius Obonya led the new ensemble as Jedermann. His Buhlschaft/Paramour Brigitte Hobmeier rushed into his arms on a bicycle. Peter Lohmeyer débuted as Tod/Death, and has played this role ever since. And the musical ensemble 013 also took shape.
