The Salzburg Festival is a European festival and, despite its international reputation, it is primarily an Austrian festival, or rather a Salzburg festival. With a comprehensive programme of opera, theatre and concerts, the Salzburg Festival is unrivalled worldwide in terms of its appeal and influence.

Responsibility for our cultural heritage and future generations
The Salzburg Festival is a festival of the arts that, in the spirit of tolerance and humanity, facilitates a wide variety of perspectives, interpretations and approaches to great works of art and uses these works to discuss the pressing issues of the day. This also gives rise to the task of organising activities to inspire future generations to take an interest in music and theatre, to create an awareness of the necessity of artistic engagement and to guarantee artistic activity under changing conditions.

The Salzburg Festival and the Austrian Ecolabel:
A sign for the future
By being awarded the Austrian Ecolabel for the festival district in the categories ‘Conference and Event Venue’ and ‘Speech and Music Theatre’, the Salzburg Festival is sending a clear signal that it is committed to making the festival sustainable. This certification is being awarded for the first time to the operation of a self-producing three-genre festival. It marks the beginning of a transformation that aims to redefine our activities in line with ecological, social and economic principles and integrate them into the future festival district 2030.

Sustainable innovation and artistic freedom
In our exploration of sustainable materials and techniques, we see an opportunity to rethink the creative process. This goes hand in hand with raising awareness internally, among employees and artists, and externally, among guests, sponsors and business partners. In our work, we take responsibility for climate protection, regional value creation and issues of social justice. The use of recycled materials, energy-efficient and digital technologies opens up new artistic freedom. We do not see these innovations as limitations, but rather as extensions of our artistic possibilities.

Our long-term vision: The Festival District 2030

The Festspielbezirk 2030 project is a comprehensive and urgently needed renovation and expansion of the three festival halls. The planning of the Festival District 2030 and the development of an accompanying sustainability strategy are an expression of our endeavour to establish sustainable cultural operations in the Festival District. This transformation will take place gradually, with the clear goal of making both the structural fabric and the cultural and event operations of our festival fit for the future.

Culture as an obligation
‘The Salzburg Festival must make even greater efforts to secure its essential nature and uniqueness. It must focus even more strongly on the formation of the mind and perception, as well as on understanding meaning and reality, in order to enable a social experience of community in an individualised society.’ This guiding principle from our memorandum (written on the occasion of the 100th anniversary) obliges us not only to take note of the pressing issues of our time, but also to actively respond to them – for a world in which sustainability and art go hand in hand.

The next steps towards a sustainable festival district

  • The Salzburg Festival 2023/2024 has carried out a comprehensive inventory based on the criteria of the Austrian Ecolabel. This revealed how many criteria have already been met through organisational and internal initiatives: even in the initial submission, the target criteria have been exceeded by around 300%.
  • The revision of the waste management concept and the survey of CO2 emissions are part of the inventory and reorientation.
  • From autumn 2024 onwards, a higher-level sustainability strategy is to be developed and implemented that goes beyond the basic criteria of the Austrian Ecolabel.
  • In the course of the renovation, the individual buildings are to be certified according to Klimaaktiv and ÖGNI GOLD standards, thus accommodating climate-friendly cultural operations.

AUSTRIAN ENVIRONMENTAL LABEL
for the SALZBURG FESTIVAL DISTRICT

The Salzburg Festival Foundation was the first Austrian festival organisation to be awarded the Austrian Ecolabel in two categories: The festival’s operations are certified in the area of ‘spoken and musical theatre’, while the three venues in the festival district are certified as ‘conference and event locations’.

‘We are delighted that we were able to achieve this first milestone in our sustainability efforts within a year thanks to the extraordinary commitment of our employees, and that we even significantly exceeded the target criteria. We are taking important steps here to ensure that future generations can also experience art and culture,’ says Lukas Crepaz on behalf of the board of directors and all employees of The Salzburg Festival Foundation.

The award was presented during the festival season by Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler and State Secretary for Art and Culture Andrea Mayer.

“The award for The Salzburg Festival Foundation shows that environmentally conscious action can be implemented in every industry and every sector. We can be very proud that one of our country’s cultural flagships is setting a good example here. Art and culture have the ability to ask big questions and develop big visions. It is precisely this vision that we need to accomplish one of our most important tasks: shaping a climate-friendly future. We can only achieve this together with institutions such as the Salzburg Festival, which are committed to climate and environmental protection and thus make an important contribution to securing our ecological foundations,” said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler.

“I am delighted that the Salzburg Festival has now been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel. This award recognises not only the outstanding cultural significance of the festival, but also its pioneering role in addressing the current challenges of our time. Art and culture have the unique ability to touch people deeply on an emotional level. This is precisely why they have a special power to raise awareness of the burning issues of our time in society and to initiate a movement towards a more environmentally conscious future. The Salzburg Festival, an important place for social reflection, impressively demonstrates how cultural institutions can take responsibility and inspire other sectors to shape a more environmentally conscious future,” said State Secretary for Art and Culture Andrea Mayer.

The Austrian Ecolabel (ÖUZ) has been awarded by the Ministry of the Environment since 1990 and is the most important state-certified environmental seal in Austria, representing a consistent focus on environmental protection and sustainability. Since 2022, certification has been available for spoken and musical theatre. The Salzburg Festival Foundation is one of the first theatre companies to have been awarded this certification since then.

The process initiated with the certification also represents a significant step for the Festival District 2030 project of the century. This renovation and expansion will make event operations sustainable for numerous cultural institutions that rent the festival halls.

The next steps after fulfilling the basic criteria are the development and implementation of a sustainability strategy for the continuous improvement of measures in the area of CO2 reduction and the setting of emission targets. In addition, as part of the major Festival District 2030 project, the individual buildings are to be certified according to Klimaaktiv and ÖGNI-ÖGNB GOLD standards, thus accommodating climate-friendly cultural operations.

Examples of measures:

  • Energy-efficient, environmentally friendly cooling using water from the Almkanal canal.
  • Use of energy-saving appliances and energy-saving lighting technology.
  • Heat regulation within rooms and heat recovery in ventilation and air conditioning systems.
  • Support for climate-friendly transport: bus shuttle from Salzburg to the Perner-Insel Hallein venue; festival ticket as a ticket for public transport throughout the province
  • Water dispensers and filling stations for drinking water, exclusively reusable beverage bottles for all employees and artists
  • Sustainably certified laundry, dishwashing and cleaning detergents in bulk containers
  • 100% of electricity sourced from Austrian certificates of origin
  • Cooperation with certified external catering service providers

The Salzburg Festival Foundation has thus acquired the right to label the Salzburg Festival District location: Großes Festspielhaus – Haus für Mozart – Felsenreitschule, Hofstallgasse 1, 5020 Salzburg with the Austrian Ecolabel. Marcus Piso and Nathalie Prasser are responsible for project management for the certification. They were supported by Erwin Bernsteiner from the Office for Environmental Issues as an external consultant.
