Two operas by Claudio Monteverdi were scheduled for the 350th anniversary of his death: Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Jürgen Flimm adapted L’incoronazione di Poppea. René Jacobs and Herbert Wernicke produced L’Orfeo.

However, the new production by the Festival débutant Wernicke was not shown to the first-night guests. Owing to bad weather, the performance planned in the Residenz courtyard had to be given in concert form in the Mozarteum. A year later, Wernicke landed a success with his interpretation of Boris Godunov with Claudio Abbado.

The straight drama season opened in 1993 with the world première of Botho Strauss’s Das Gleichgewicht/The Balance, directed by Luc Bondy. Deborah Warner directed Coriolanus, the second part of the Shakespeare Roman trilogy. The Camerata Academica held its own concert cycle and débuted also as opera orchestra with Lucio Silla (Sylvain Cambreling/Peter Mussbach). The concert programme featured a Hungarian focus with works by Béla Bartók, György Kurtág and György Ligeti. Another novelty was the Zeitfluss Festival, with a focus on Luigi Nono’s compositions.
