24 July – 29 August

After the turbulence erupting from the drama team – Peter Stein’s successor Ivan Nagel was engaged for only one season – Frank Baumbauer took over the department as artistic consultant and brought out the German-language première of the Shakespeare adaptation Schlachten by Tom Lanoye and Luk Perceval on the Perner-Insel.

The theatre marathon lasted twelve hours, a condensation of Shakespeare’s eight history plays, and was stormed by the public, but led to irritation in the media and to an order by the State Government prohibiting children and young people under 16 to attend the performances. Nevertheless, as a consequence, the production entered into the history of interpretation.

Two Faust versions took the spotlight in the opera programme: Busoni’s musical adaptation of the Goethe drama was directed by Kent Nagano and Peter Mussbach, the Catalonian group La Fura dels Baus directed Hector Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust. And director Claus Guth made his Salzburg début with the world première of Luciano Berio’s Cronaca del luogo.
