Peter Stein’s era saw a strong accentuation of straight drama productions; he scouted for unconventional venues, just as Max Reinhardt had before him. His productions on the new stage of the Perner-Insel were just as successful as in the Felsenreitschule/Summer Riding School.

In 1996, Stein focused on Shakespeare yet again with Sommernachtstraum/A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Leander Haussmann, and Richard II, a guest appearance of the Royal National Theatre. Furthermore, he promoted Austrian drama and directed Raimund’s mystery play Der Alpenkönig und der Menschenfeind with costumes by Moidele Bickel and in a stage set by Ferdinand Wögerbauer, the cast included Helmuth Lohner, Otto Schenk, Walter Schmidinger and Gertraud Jesserer.

In 1996, Peter Stein also staged opera and brought out Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron, Pierre Boulez’s sole appearance as opera conductor in Salzburg. The focus on Schoenberg also included Pierrot lunaire directed by Christoph Marthaler.
