26 July – 31 August

After the uproar about the conferment of Austrian citizenship to Bertolt Brecht and the resulting expulsion of Gottfried von Einem from the Festival’s Board of Directors – he had supported Brecht until the very end – the composer was to be rehabilitated.

In November 1952, the Festival Supervisory Board authorized the inclusion of von Einem’s opera Der Prozess into the 1953 Festival programme. Einem’s recall into the Board of Directors was ‘not feasible for reasons of incompatibility’.

The world première took place on 17 August 1953. Karl Böhm conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Schuh/Neher team was responsible for the staging. The cast of singers included such famous names as Walter Berry, Lisa Della Casa and Oskar Czerwenka. The role of Josef K. was sung by Max Lorenz. The first night was broadcast to seven countries, the production was taken over by the Vienna State Opera in September.

Using a private recording belonging to the composer, Gottfried Kraus reconstructed the performance in a Festival document. The original tapes are lost.
