After the regular TV programme started operating in Austria on six days a week starting at 8 pm as of January 1957, ORF decided in June 1958 for the first time to broadcast Festival events on television as well.

A Serenade, the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas, Così fan tutte and Jedermann/Everyman were televised in 1958. The Festival received a revenue of 55,000 Austrian schillings.

Because his Jedermann was rejected as ‘antiquated’ and aware of critical voices in the Board of Directors, in 1959 Ernst Lothar announced his resignation as head of straight drama. Oscar Fritz Schuh had already contributed a year previously to a repositioning of the straight drama department. The fostering of contemporary drama was in future to play an equivalent role alongside continuation of the traditional repertoire.
