The opera schedule in the anniversary year of 1956 was dedicated wholly to the genius loci Mozart: four revivals – including Don Giovanni – the takeover of Idomeneo from the Mozart Week and also a new production of Le nozze di Figaro formed a veritable show parade of the Mozart repertoire.

Don Giovanni already marked a highlight of the Festival on its first night in 1953, for which Clemens Holzmeister, after the example of the Faust-Stadt (Town), had constructed a Don Giovanni-Stadt (Town) in the Felsenreitschule. The production caused a sensation in the media as well. The filmed report on the new production in the Austria Wochenschau (Newsreel) was boycotted by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. And the film of Don Giovanni by Paul Czinner made at short notice in 1954 likewise caused an upset. The film was planned to be completed in only eight nights, the music was to be taped. Furtwängler expressed great reservations as to the film’s quality.

In 1956, Dimitri Mitropoulos conducted the revival. The title role was again performed by Cesare Siepi.
