24 July – 30 August

Both the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna State Opera planned to include Don Giovanni and Fidelio in their 1955 schedules. Karl Böhm, director of the Vienna State Opera, threatened to stay away from the Festival should the schedules be the same.

Furtwängler supported Böhm in the scheduling for the reopening of the State Opera and proposed a new production of Die Zauberflöte for Salzburg, in a set designed by Oskar Kokoschka. In 1953, Kokoschka had headed the first International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg.

Wilhelm Furtwängler died on 30 November 1954; behind the scenes, a fight broke out between Böhm and Karajan over Furtwängler’s succession. Georg Solti took over as musical director of Die Zauberflöte. The production was directed by Herbert Graf and in a set and costumes designed by Oskar Kokoschka, but polarized opinions. Christa Ludwig made her Festival début as Second Lady. She also appeared in this summer as the Composer in the revival of Ariadne auf Naxos.
