Herbert von Karajan had already brought out Verdi’s Don Carlo at the Salzburg Festival in 1958, then directed by Gustaf Gründgens.

Despite its great success, the production did not stay in the repertoire. Karajan’s second production of Don Carlo followed in 1975, this time staged by himself and in the opulent set by Günther Schneider-Siemssen and with costumes by Georges Wakhévitch. The sole new opera production of 1975 was a great musical success and was revived in subsequent years. The ensemble was made in heaven – including Nicolai Ghiaurov, Gheorghe Crăsnaru, José van Dam, Mirella Freni and Christa Ludwig – with Plácido Domingo’s name appearing in Salzburg for the first time: he made his Salzburg début in the title role. In 1976, José Carreras celebrated his Salzburg début in this production.

The second opera to be conducted by Herbert von Karajan was the revival of the Ponnelle production of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. In 1972, therefore, Ponnelle managed to bring off the superlative achievement of directing Mozart with bravura on the huge stage of the Large Festival Hall.
