Herbert von Karajan set a further accent in the Verdi repertoire: for the first time, in 1979, Verdi’s Aida was on the programme of the Salzburg Festival.
Karajan directed and conducted, Günther Schneider-Siemssen designed the set, Georges Wakhévitch the costumes, while John Neumeier was the choreographer. A star cast was heard again on stage: Mirella Freni in the title role, José Carreras as Radamès, Piero Cappuccilli, Nicolai Ghiaurov and Ruggero Raimondi.
Karl Böhm, honoured for his 85th birthday, conducted the first night of Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos in 1979 with Hildegard Behrens and Edita Gruberova (stage director: Dieter Dorn).
Meanwhile, a new dawn was palpable in the concert schedule under the new General Secretary Otto Sertl: contemporary works and world premières were cropping up more and more in the schedule.
