Nestroy’s Der Talisman directed by Otto Schenk, set and costumes by Jürgen Rose and with a brilliant cast – Helmuth Lohner as Titus Feuerfuchs, Vilma Degischer, Dolores Schmidinger, Senta Wengraf, Christiane Hörbiger, Heinrich Schweiger and others – was a resounding success with the public.

It was the wish of Ernst Haeusserman – head of drama – to focus the repertoire more on Austrian dramatists.

The sole new opera production in 1976 was Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, with James Levine conducting. In the previous year, the director of the New York Metropolitan Opera – aged only 32 at the time – had given his Festival début conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, who had already proven his mettle with Figaro and Così fan tutte, was entrusted with the staging. In summer 1977, Ponnelle completed his Mozart/Da Ponte cycle with Don Giovanni; Karl Böhm was conducting.
