In 1965, Giorgio Strehler had made his début at the Festival with his acclaimed Entführung aus dem Serail/Abduction from the Seraglio. The production remained in the repertoire until the mid-1970s. In 1972, Strehler, at Karajan’s wish, was nominated as consultant.

A year later he achieved another success with his Shakespeare adaptation Das Spiel der Mächtigen. Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute following in summer 1974 was to mark the start of a partnership between Karajan and Strehler, but the latter’s attempt to exploit the full potential of the Large Festival Hall ended up as an overloaded production. Karajan refused to conduct the production again, and Strehler resigned from his Salzburg duties.

For Max Reinhardt’s 100th birthday in 1973, a new production of Jedermann/Everyman by Ernst Haeusserman was performed. After Leopold Lindtberg’s new interpretation – regarded as idiosyncratic – with Ernst Schröder as Jedermann, it was now to be based once more on Reinhardt’s prompt book. The title role was taken over until 1977 by Curd Jürgens, joined by Christiane Hörbiger and Senta Berger as Buhlschaft/Paramour.
