Despite cuts in the budget, in 2000 seven opera premières were planned including the world première of Kaija Saariaho’s L’amour de loin, under Kent Nagano and Peter Sellars, also Hans Neuenfels’s production of Così fan tutte and Claus Guth’s interpretation of Iphigénie en Tauride.

The drama department backed a young generation of stage directors: Martin Kušej made his Festival début with Hamlet, Thomas Ostermeier directed Jon Fosse’s Der Name/The Name. Christoph Ransmayr was ‘Guest Writer’.

After personal tributes to Cerha, Ligeti, Kurtàg and Boulez, whose dramaturgical compilations set unparalleled standards, Hans Landesmann conceived a portrait of the German composer and later Siemens Music Award winner Wolfgang Rihm. The sound cosmos of his multifaceted oeuvre was opened up in seven concerts, a world of music constantly alluding to literature, philosophy and the visual arts. In addition, Landesmann provided a platform since 1996 in the series ‘Next Generation’ for young composers including Kaija Saariaho, Matthias Pintscher, Olga Neuwirth, Georg Friedrich Haas and others.
