The new production of Verdi’s La traviata directed by Willy Decker with the dream couple Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón was a sensational success. The minimalist stage design, an overdimensional clock of life, was Wolfgang Gussmann’s idea.

Carlo Rizzi took over the musical direction from Marcello Viotti, who had died unexpectedly. The première was broadcast by ORF and was a quota hit with more than 700,000 viewers. Likewise acclaimed was Günter Krämer’s production of Mitridate, re di Ponto in the Residenz courtyard. Marc Minkowski directed Les Musiciens du Louvre.

Head of drama Martin Kušej, who took ‘We, the Barbarians’ as his motto for his first season, presented his production of Grillparzer’s König Ottokars Glück und Ende/King Ottokar, His Rise and Fall with Tobias Moretti and Michael Maertens on the Perner-Insel. Barbara Frey was successful with Horváth’s Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald/Tales from the Vienna Woods, Stephan Kimmig with Kleist’s Penthesilea. Nina Hoss took over the role of Buhlschaft/Paramour in Jedermann/Everyman, Ulrike Folkerts played Tod/Death as the first woman to do so.
