After the tumultuous opening première of Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail/The Abduction from the Seraglio interpreted by the Norwegian director Stefan Herheim, the team Harnoncourt/Kušej continued its successful Mozart cycle with La clemenza di Tito.

Les Contes d’Hoffmann was a hit with the public, although there was criticism for the conservative stage concept by David McVicar. Meanwhile the world première of Hans Werner Henze’s ‘comedy’ about the legendary hoopoe L’Upupa und der Triumph der Sohnesliebe was greeted with unanimous positive response: ‘an Oriental arabesque full of sound magic’.1 Markus Stenz and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, director Dieter Dorn, set designer Jürgen Rose and the ensemble with Matthias Goerne, John Mark Ainsley, Laura Aikin and the composer himself were treated to standing ovations.

Johann Kresnik interpreted Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, and Michael Thalheimer directed Büchner’s Woyzeck, the new productions in straight drama. The Young Directors Award was won by the Latvian Alvis Hermanis. Christa Wolf was enthusiastically received as ‘Guest Writer’.
