Peter Ruzicka made an illustrious start to his artistic directorship: Don Giovanni conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and staged by Martin Kušej was a huge success; Anna Netrebko as Donna Anna advanced to become the public’s darling.

Hardly less appraisal was awarded to Zemlinsky’s Der König Kandaules/King Kandaules interpreted by Kent Nagano and Christine Mielitz, for which the sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka provided the set. This was the start of a series of performances of works by ostracized composers.

Head of drama Jürgen Flimm also had a successful start: For the first time in thirty years, there was a veritable new production of Jedermann, with Peter Simonischek in the title role, Veronica Ferres as Buhlschaft/Paramour, Tobias Moretti as Teufel/Devil and Guter Gesell/Good Companion, and Jens Harzer as Tod/Death. In his interpretation director Christian Stückl slanted the work towards its folk theatre character. There was also a jubilant response to Andrea Breth’s Festival début with Schnitzler’s Das weite Land/The Vast Domain. A new institution was established by the head of drama productions, the Young Directors Project competition.
