SALZBURG FESTIVAL JULY 18 TO AUGUST 31, 2014

270 PERFORMANCES IN 45 DAYS AT 16 VENUES

The Salzburg Festival owes its existence to the idea and the unshakeable faith of its founders in a work of peace. One hundred years after the outbreak of World War I, commemorating this event is suggested even by the history of the Festival’s founding itself. In 1917 Max Reinhardt spoke of art “not as a luxury for the rich and sated, but as food for the needy”. And Reinhardt continued, in defiance of his times, which were as inimical to art as they were deathly: “Art, especially theatrical art, has not only held its own during the ravages of this war, but it has proven that its existence and maintenance are among the most indispensable necessities.”

Please read more about the entire programme in the 2014 Salzburg Festival Press Kit. You will also find short texts in the PDFs on this page.
