A literary maverick deeply rooted in Romanticism, E. T. A. Hoffmann created worlds full of bizarre happenings with his stories. In contrast to Hofmannsthal’s play, in which psychoanalysis plays an important role, Hoffmann’s interpretation of the legend of Elis Fröbom and his bride Ulla is like a journey through the night, in which reality loses its hold and eternal love is inexorably awakened.
