Saint François d’Assise – A Tour of the Exhibition with Philippe Sly

At the Salzburg Festival, Philippe Sly portrays Saint Francis in Olivier Messiaen’s SAINT FRANÇOIS D’ASSISE. At the DomQuartier Salzburg, he encounters the saint’s story from a different perspective: the exhibition ‘Lebenskunst – 800 Jahre Franz von Assisi’ brings together images, legends and motifs that also shape Messiaen’s opera.
From the stigmata to Francis as a reformer to the legend of the Wolf of Gubbio: Philippe Sly demonstrates how closely these stories are linked to the central themes of the opera. They tell of devotion and renewal, of a connection with nature, and of confronting one’s own dark side.
In this way, the artworks at the DomQuartier and Messiaen’s musical world converge, offering a unique perspective on Francis of Assisi.
The exhibition can be seen at the DomQuartier Salzburg until 2 November 2026.
