While another much appraised production by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle was enriching the repertoire in the Large Festival Hall with Plácido Domingo in the title role of Les Contes d’Hoffmann, the Small Festival Hall was putting on a new production of Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail under the baton of Lorin Maazel.

Frank Hoffmann played Bassa Selim, Ileana Cotrubaș Konstanze, Peter Schreier Belmonte and Martti Talvela Osmin. The Italian scenic and costume designer Filippo Sanjust had produced a success in 1966 with the set for Henze’s The Bassarids and designed the set for Maximilian Schell’s 1979 production of Schnitzler’s Das weite Land/The Vast Domain. Now he made his mark also as stage director of a Festival production; it was mainly his opulent stage design that hit the headlines. ‘Arcades, columns, stairs, little domes, little balconies rotate non-stop, and this architectural orgy is completed by a dizzying crowd of colourful turbans with silk-attired persons below.’1
