We meet another ageing theatre man in Bruscon, the main protagonist in Bernhard’s Der Theatermacher, which was premièred in 1985 at the Landestheater/State Theatre under the direction of Claus Peymann. The actor Bruscon is obsessed with the theatre and wants to perform his comedy of mankind, Das Rad der Geschichte/The Wheel of History, in a village inn, but in the end doesn’t succeed.

The stage set was devised by Karl-Ernst Herrmann. In 1982, Herrmann had made his début as a stage director with Gerard Mortier at the Brussels Opera. During the years with Mortier as Artistic Director in Salzburg, he was to have a formative influence on the Festival.

The Felsenreitschule/Summer Riding School was the venue for another world première: Hans Werner Henze’s adaptation of Claudio Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria. Michael Hampe was stage director (and a future member of the Board of Directors).

Finally, at the same time, another ageing impresario announced he would be reducing his activities in the future: Herbert von Karajan. In 1985, he restricted his contribution to the revival of his Carmen production from the Easter Festival starring Agnes Baltsa, José Carreras and José van Dam.
