22 – 26 August

The performance of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s Jedermann directed by Max Reinhardt on 22 August 1920 on Domplatz / Cathedral Square marked the birth of the Salzburg Festival, despite all reservations against the enterprise at a time of hunger and privation.

First performed in Berlin in 1911, Jedermann wasn’t a great success until played in Salzburg. The title role, as in Berlin, was played by Alexander Moissi. Four performances were scheduled, two others added and reserved exclusively for the Salzburg population.

In his prompt book, Max Reinhardt made notes on the spatial facilities of various performances, jotted down drawings of the stages and made notes on the staging of the characters. The prompt book documents Reinhardt’s notes on the Berlin première in the Schumann Circus (in black pencil); for the version on Domplatz in Salzburg he used a blue pencil (1920) or his famous purple ink (1930s). He noted down the New York guest performance of Jedermann in 1927 in the Century Theatre in red.
