26 July – 30 August

The successful production from the previous year, Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione di anima e di corpo – with the Mozarteum Orchestra – relocated in 1969 to the Kollegienkirche, where it remained in the repertoire until 1973. It was the first time since 1922 that the Kollegienkirche was used again as a venue for the Salzburg Festival.

Hans Widrich, since 1968 press officer for the Salzburg Festival, played a major role in the production of the azione sacra, which Bernhard Paumgartner had discovered and edited during his ‘exile’ in Florence. He remembers: ‘Paumgartner was interested (also financially) in reviving the success in 1969. But sadly: the reconstruction of the Felsenreitschule/Summer Riding School by Clemens Holzmeister was fixed for this summer. What were we to do? Herbert Graf asked me to intervene and request the Archbishop if he might give permission for the Kollegienkirche to be used for this religious play. He guaranteed absolute discretion […]. I was now building a bridge on my back between the Festival District and the Archiepiscopal Palace, since I was simultaneously press officer for both institutions!’1
