After the première of Rudolf Wagner-Régeny’s Das Bergwerk zu Falun/The Mines of Falun after a text by Hofmannsthal, in 1961 the tradition of regular opera world premières was interrupted. In 1966, there was once more a world première of an opera: Christoph von Dohnányi and Gustav Rudolf Sellner premièred Hans Werner Henze’s The Bassarids.

The work is noted today as one of the most important operas of the 20th century. The composer wrote to Tassilo Nekola: ‘I had a thrilling impression of the technics, the chorus, the orchestra and not least the perfect organization, and left full of pride and joy at the success of everything, which wasn’t spoiled by reading several inane press reviews.’ On the same day, he thanked the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for their ‘grandiose and unique achievement’.

Herbert von Karajan’s Carmen turned out quasi to be a counterpoint to this production, which he directed and conducted this summer with Grace Bumbry and Jon Vickers in the leading roles. Mirella Freni thrilled audiences with her Salzburg début as Micaela.
