Markus Obereder

Markus Obereder studied the teaching of music and of instrumental music and choral and orchestral conducting with Walter Hagen-Groll at the Mozarteum University of Music in Salzburg. He also studied at Louisiana State University and has attended masterclasses with Eric Ericson, Peter Gülke and Martin Sieghart.

He gained experience as a chorus master and conductor with the Salzburg Bach Choir and Chamber Choir, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, the Austrian Ensemble for New Music (oenm), the Linz-based Ensemble Sonare, the South Bohemian Philharmonic, the Euregio Youth Orchestra in the Netherlands and the orchestra and choirs of Salzburg’s Musisches Gymnasium. Among the eminent musicians with whom he has worked are Leopold Hager, Ivor Bolton, Johannes Kalitzke, Howard Arman, René Jacobs, Benjamin Schmid and Bobby McFerrin.

Markus Obereder currently teaches choral conducting and choral didactics at the Mozarteum University and conducts one of the choirs in the Music Teaching Department. At Salzburg’s Musikgymnasium he is in charge of the symphony orchestra, which he has already taken on tour to Italy, France, Germany and India.

Markus Obereder has won several competitions with his choirs, including the International Competition of Youth Choirs in Celje, Slovenia, the International Franz Schubert Choral Competition in Vienna and the Austria Cantat Choral Competition. He was also a finalist in the European Broadcasting Union’s competition, Let the Peoples Sing.

Martin Obereder sits on the jury and acts as a consultant for a number of international choral festivals. He also runs the International Choral College at Schloss Zell an der Pram. In 2000 he received the Erwin Ortner Award for the promotion of choral music. In 2005 he conducted the Eurochor and in 2016 the Austrian Youth Choir.

As both a singer and an instrumentalist Martin Obereder has performed with the Ballaststoff Orchestra in Salzburg, with which he has taken part in concerts throughout the German-speaking world and recorded several CDs for Austrian Radio.
