The great director Federico Fellini takes his audience on a personal journey through time to Rome in 1939. During the Mussolini era, he himself came to the capital from Rimini as a young man to study there. He skillfully interweaves the confusing impressions that fell on the young director, the memories, and the fantasies with the present to create a masterfully composed, cinematic collage. The past, the present, and the dreamed flow seamlessly into one another.

Dispensing with a conventional plot, the award-winning, episodic city portrait conveys a sensual impression of the Roman life and features guest appearances by Italian actors, such as Marcello Mastroianni and Anna Magnani.
