Salzburger Kultursommer 13 – 27 July
Only a torso of a programme could be presented in the war year 1940. The season lasted a mere fortnight in July, and consisted entirely of a concert cycle by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
But this made a continuation of the Festival possible and at the same time counteracted the impending unemployment of the orchestra members.
‚Hans Knappertsbusch was invited for four concerts and Karl Böhm conducted a concert, as did Franz Lehár, who directed a performance of excerpts from his operettas. The committee made a point of presenting the series as a “purely Philharmonic idea”. To this purpose, a show of archival materials was also put on — the first exhibition in the Philharmonic’s history. The cycle was such a great success that even Furtwängler agreed at short notice to conduct an extra concert on 29 July, which had to be repeated the following day due to great demand.‘1
