Yonier Camilo Mejia

Yonier Camilo Mejia was born in Cali (Colombia), where he was drawn to music and dance from an early age. His formal dance education began in Barcelona, before his interest for improvisation and performance brought him to SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance). During the last year of his studies, he appeared with the Bodhi Project Company of SEAD in the choreographer Cecilia Bengolea’s production Sound of the Trap. In 2018 he performed in Jan Lauwers’ production of L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Salzburg Festival. He has also worked in several other Needcompany productions: War and Turpentine, Isabella’s Room, All the Good by Jan Lauwers and Probabilities of Independent Events by Grace Ellen Barkey. Additional performance projects in 2020 included The Sadness, a multimedia piece by Ula Sickle, Draconis Lacrimae by Pablo Lilienfeld and Federico Vladimir Pezdirc, and Spheres & Circles Circles & Spheres by Isaiah Lopaz. In May 2021 he performed again in L’incoronazione di Poppea, when Jans Lauwers’ production was premiered at the Vienna State Opera.
