of shock and open arms and beauty and dread,
of the sublime and the base in an indissoluble synthesis.’
Wolfgang Rihm
At the 2021 Salzburg Festival, Wolfgang Rihm will open the ‘Speeches about the century’ on 1 August as the first speaker in this year’s series. The speeches will offer reflections – from a wide variety of perspectives – on the past century, with all its high and low points, ruptures and glories, political and social frictions and achievements.
In conversation with the musicologist Ulrich Konrad, the composer Wolfgang Rihm will discuss how he and others have made an impact on the world through music and art.
