Drawing on his lectures at the Collège de France in Paris, Wajdi Mouawad reflects on writing as a means of engaging with history, tragedy and the violence of our times. In 2024/25, Wajdi Mouawad was a visiting professor at the Collège de France, holding the annual chair L’invention de l’Europe par les langues et les cultures (The Invention of Europe through Languages and Cultures), as part of a collaboration with the French Ministry of Culture. Moving between literature, philosophy and personal testimony, he explores what it means to see, to encounter one another, to love and to write – in a Europe shaped by memories and conflicts.
This performance is less an introduction or explanation of the play than an encounter with the ideas that underpin Mouawad’s writing.
The prologue involves a real blood draw and the visible handling of real blood. People who are sensitive to medical procedures, blood or related depictions are advised not to attend the prologue and to enter the auditorium only for the performance of Europa.
