‘The world has changed: nature is no longer as idyllic and intact as it was in Beethoven’s time. What we have done to it cannot be undone,’ says Patricia Kopatchinskaja about her project Les Adieux. Taking Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony as their starting point, the musicians bid farewell — with works by Schumann, Shostakovich and Nono, as well as the sounds of a prehistoric instrument — to a world that, if only in our imaginations, once seemed whole.
