1 – 31 August

The Salzburg Festival celebrated its tenth anniversary in 1930 with numerous events. Apart from his commitment for the Festival, Governor Franz Rehrl also backed Max Reinhardt without reservation; Reinhardt was exposed to more and more anti-Semitic hostility and stayed for longer periods in America.

In winter 1927/28, for instance, he put on his Jedermann/Everyman in New York as part of a three-month guest appearance. It is from this period that one of Reinhardt’s speeches preserves for us a rare audio record of his voice.

For the Festival anniversary, the Governor endowed a bust of the Festival co-founder for the Faistauer foyer. The area in front of the Festival Hall was renamed Max-Reinhardt-Platz. A photographic glass plate has been preserved in the estate of the Ellinger photo studio, showing the Reinhardt bust. For the anniversary, Reinhardt extended an invitation to a feast in Leopoldskron, at which the guests were surprised by a midnight recital in which Herbert von Karajan could be heard on the piano.
