The mezzo-soprano Yulia Vakula studied in Moscow at the Galina Vishnevskaya College of Musical and Theatrical Arts and at the Russian State Specialized Academy of Arts, graduating from these institutions with distinction in 2019 and 2024 respectively. She is a prize-winner of international competitions including the St Petersburg International Competition of Opera Singers (first prize, 2024), and the Hibla Gerzmava Opera Singers and Accompanists Competition (Moscow, 2025, first prize). She has participated in the ‘Opera Class’ project of the Elena Obraztsova Foundation in 2023 and in the Ildar Abrazakov Summer School, the Theatre Boulevard Festival in Moscow and the Ildar Abdrazakov Music Festival, all in 2024.

In the 2023/24 season Yulia Vakula was a soloist in Mozart’s Requiem and in Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Theresienmesse at the Moscow International House of Music. In 2025 she made her debut at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca in the title role of Rossini’s Tancredi.

Her repertory also includes the title role of Carmen, Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Child in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges and Madame Flora in Menotti’s The Medium.

In 2025 she made her debut with musicAeterna singing the mezzo-soprano solo in Mahler’s Second Symphony on a Russian tour to Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Perm, Moscow and St Petersburg to celebrate the orchestra and choir’s 20th anniversary.

From the beginning of the 2025/26 season Yulia Vakula becomes a member of the Anton Rubinstein Academy, a training initiative of musicAeterna and Teodor Currentzis for singers. She made her debut as a member of the academy in the semi-staged production Haendel: A Dedication Ceremony to George Frideric Handel, which received its premiere at St Petersburg’s Dom Radio (Radio House) and subsequently opened the 2025 Diaghilev Festival in Perm.
