Since its foundation in 2004, the vocal ensemble Vox Luminis — directed by bass Lionel Meunier — has been internationally praised for its unique sound, both with a cast of soloists and in larger productions. Vox Luminis specializes in English, Italian and German repertory from the 16th to the early 18th century, bringing to life not only well-known masterpieces, but also rare gems.
A core group of vocal soloists is supplemented, depending on the repertory, by an extensive continuo section, solo instruments, a complete orchestra and up to forty singers (Vox Luminis XL).
Every year Vox Luminis gives around seventy concerts at major concert halls and festivals worldwide, including at Bozar, Brussels, deSingel in Antwerp, the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, the Auditori in Barcelona, London’s Wigmore Hall, the Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, New York’s Lincoln Center, the Flanders Festival Ghent, the Festival de Wallonie, the Festival de Saintes, the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, the Bremen Music Festival, the Bachfest Leipzig, the Aldeburgh Festival and the Boston Early Music Festival, as well as the Salzburg Festival.
Vox Luminis is artist in residence at Concertgebouw Bruges and at the Abbaye Musicale de Malonne. In 2021, the ensemble launched a structural collaboration with the renowned Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and Freiburg Baroque Consort.
In the 2025/26 season Vox Luminis and the Freiburg Baroque Consort have performed works by Heinrich Schütz and the Bach family in Bruges, Dortmund and London and presented a Bach and Telemann programme with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra under Lionel Meunier in Stuttgart and Magdeburg. This summer they return to the Salzburg Festival with Bach’s Mass in B minor and Liszt‘s Via crucis.
Vox Luminis has released numerous recordings with Ricercar, the Alpha Classics label, Ramée and Musique in Wallonie. To mark the ensemble’s 20th anniversary, Ricercar released the CD box set Et resurrexit in 2024.
In 2012 and 2019, Vox Luminis won the Recording of the Year at the prestigious Gramophone Awards. The ensemble’s other awards include ’Klara Ensemble of the Year 2018’, BBC Music Magazine’s ‘Choral Award Winner 2018’, the 2020 Caecilia Prize, three Diapasons d’Or and several German Record Critics’ Awards.
