Tenor and countertenor

The tenor and countertenor Vojtěch Semerád has performed as a soloist with renowned ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, Ensemble Correspondances, the Huelgas Ensemble, Pygmalion, Vox Luminis and the Wrocław Baroque Ensemble. He has appeared at major performance venues and international festivals, including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Wigmore Hall in London, the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, the Park Avenue Armory in New York, the Logan Center for the Arts in Chicago and the Prague Spring International Music Festival.

Recent important repertory includes Acis in Handel’s Acis and Galatea, the title role of Lully’s Atys, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen and Charpentier’s David et Jonathas and Histoires sacrées. He also regularly appears as the Evangelist in Bach’s Passions and oratorios.

Vojtěch Semerád is artistic director of Cappella Mariana, which explores forgotten vocal polyphonic repertory from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque era, and which receives regular invitations to perform at festivals such as Concentus Moraviae in Brno, the Utrecht Early Music Festival, the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, the KLANGVOKAL Musikfestival Dortmund, Laus Polyphoniae (part of the Festival van Vlaanderen in Antwerp), the MA (Musica Antiqua) Festival in Bruges, the Prague Spring Festival and the Regensburg Early Music Days.

As a violinist he is a permanent member of the Prague-based Collegium Marianum and performs in cross-genre and original music projects. As a music researcher he is involved in the rediscovery of vocal works from the 15th to the 17th centuries.

He has made more than forty recordings for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Alpha Classics, harmonia mundi, Naïve, Passacaille Records and Supraphon, and appears regularly on Czech radio.

Vojtěch Semerád studied at the Prague Conservatory and the Charles University, and also studied Baroque violin at the Paris Conservatoire with François Fernandez. Since 2010 he has continued his training in masterclasses and private lessons with Chantal Santon Jeffery, Peter Kooij and Markéta Cukrová.

He is a finalist of the International Telemann Competition in Magdeburg.
