Biography

Ursula Kudrna

Ursula Kudrna was born in Vienna and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there.

In the 2018/19 season she designed costumes for Lydia Steier’s production of Die Zauberflöte at the Salzburg Festival and for Beat Furrer’s Violetter Schnee (directed by Claus Guth) at the Berlin State Opera, and was voted Costume Designer of the Year by the critics in the magazine Opernwelt. She has also collaborated with Claus Guth on his production of Salome for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and of The Makropulos Case in Berlin.

Ursula Kudrna works regularly with the director Philipp Stölzl. She has designed costumes for his productions of Orphée aux enfers, Der fliegende Holländer, Il trovatore and Turandot at the Berlin State Opera, Gounod’s Faust and Rienzi at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Die Fledermaus at the Stuttgart State Opera and Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci at the Salzburg Easter Festival and at the Semperoper Dresden.

For the director Lydia Steier she has designed costumes for Giulio Cesare at the Komische Oper Berlin, Handel’s Jephtha at the Potsdamer Winteroper, Kát’a Kabanová and Saul at the Oldenburg State Theatre, Turandot at the Cologne Opera, Dai Fujikura’s A Dream of Armageddon at the New National Theatre in Tokyo and Stockhausen’s Donnerstag aus Licht at the Theater Basel – a production which in 2016 was voted Production of the Year by the critics in the magazine Opernwelt.

With the director Jürgen Flimm she has worked on productions of Manon Lescaut at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Le nozze di Figaro at the Berlin State Opera, Rossini’s Otello at La Scala, Milan, and Salvatore Sciarrino’s Ti vedo, ti sento, mi perdo at La Scala and the Berlin State Opera. For the 2017 re-opening of the Berlin State Opera, she designed sets for Flimm’s production of Schumann’s Szenen aus Goethes Faust.

She has also worked for the Berliner Ensemble, Theater Bremen, the Darmstadt State Theatre, the Konzert Theater Bern, the Mainz State Theatre, the National Theatre in Weimar, the Volksbühne and the Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin, and for the Wiener Festwochen.
