Thomas Hamberger

Bass-baritone Thomas Hamberger grew up in Rosenheim, coming from a musical, chorally minded family. During his studies as a mechanical engineer, he began to focus on private vocal training and appeared frequently as a soloist with various choirs. Following his studies, he successfully auditioned to be a member of the Bavarian Radio Concert Choir, working with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Muti, Bernard Haitink, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Georg Solti and Claudio Abbado.

His solo career quickly developed and he appeared in oratorios and as an exponent of Lieder in Germany and throughout Europe. He has also appeared at various international music festivals, including in Israel, performing Mendelssohn’s Elias and Handel’s Messiah, as well as Schubert’s Winterreise and Schumann’s Dichterliebe and the world premiere of Penderecki’s Seven Gates of Jerusalem. In addition to his performances at the Philharmonie in the Gasteig, the Herkulessaal and the Prinzregententheater in Munich, he has performed at various other important European concert halls including the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre, the Arsenal in Metz, the Philharmonie in Essen and the Konzerthaus in Vienna. Thanks to the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture, he appeared as the bass soloist in Haydn’s Die Schöpfung with the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in Sofia.

Thomas Hamberger’s wide-ranging repertoire includes almost all the well-known oratorios and cantatas by composers such as Bach, Mozart, Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn, César Franck and Frank Martin. He also continues to perform Lieder and is the bass in the a cappella quartet Singsemble H2-O2. He also enjoys singing with period instrument ensembles such as La Banda, the Baroque ensemble Sans-Souci and the Hofkapelle Munich, as well as appearing on various radio broadcasts and CD recordings.

Thomas Hamberger has been a member of the Bavarian Radio Choir since 2008. In 2005 he was awarded Rosenheim’s culture prize for his extraordinary achievements as a singer.
