Thomas Ebenstein

The tenor Thomas Ebenstein was born in 1979 in Carinthia and received his vocal training at the University of Music in Vienna with Helena Łazarska. Since the 2012/13 season he has been a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera. From 2003 to 2012 he was a member of the ensemble of the Komische Oper Berlin.

International guest engagements have taken him to opera companies including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala, Milan, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Berlin State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Hamburg State Opera, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Theater an der Wien, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, the Philharmonies of Berlin and Cologne, the Konzerthaus Dortmund, the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Auditorium di Milano, the Vienna Musikverein and the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Ruhrtriennale, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Wiener Festwochen, the Salzburg Easter Festival, the Verbier Festival, the Bergen International Festival and the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

He has worked with conductors such as Thomas Adès, Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Chailly, Christoph Eschenbach, Adam Fischer, Daniele Gatti, Marek Janowski, Philippe Jordan, Zubin Mehta, Ingo Metzmacher, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Kirill Petrenko, Simon Rattle, Christian Thielemann and Franz Welser-Möst.

His repertory includes roles such as Mime (Das Rheingold, Siegfried), Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier), Dancing Master (Ariadne auf Naxos), Shuisky (Boris Godunov), the Scribe (Khovanshchina), the Shabby Peasant (Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District), Bob Boles (Peter Grimes), Caliban (The Tempest), David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Steersman (Der fliegende Holländer), Truffaldino (The Love for Three Oranges) and Alfred (Die Fledermaus).

In 2013 Thomas Ebenstein appeared as Pedrillo in the Salzburg Festival’s production of Die Entführung aus dem Serail, which was recorded for and released on DVD.

In 2018 he released his debut album, featuring Lieder by Richard Strauss, Schoenberg, Zemlinsky and Korngold, in the record label Capriccio’s series ‘Première Portraits’.
