Tabea Zimmermann

Current as of July 2023

Tabea Zimmermann is one of the most sought-after and celebrated performers of our time. Through the award of the international Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2020, and through residencies with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, with the Berlin Philharmonic and, in the 2022/23 season, with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tabea Zimmermann has received the greatest recognition for her tireless enthusiasm, through which she conveys her artistic knowledge and love of music to her public. Audiences and fellow-musicians alike value her profound musical understanding and the naturalness of her playing, as well as her charismatic personality. In her work with orchestras, she is always guided by a chamber music ideal, in which artistic integrity is paramount.

As a soloist, she works regularly with the world’s most important orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic. In recent seasons, Tabea Zimmermann has held residencies in Weimar, Luxembourg and Hamburg and with the Bamberg Symphony, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Frankfurt Museum Society and Ensemble Resonanz. Since 2022, she has been artistic partner of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

In addition to her residency with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, highlights of the 2022/23 season have included a tour with the Berlin Philharmonic. In the field of chamber music, she has given concerts with students of the Kronberg Academy, duo recitals with Kirill Gerstein and trio concerts with Jörg Widmann and Dénes Várjon as well as performing at the Kammermusikwoche at Schloss Elmau, which she programmed.

Tabea Zimmermann has inspired many contemporary composers and introduced numerous new works to the concert and chamber music repertory. In 2020 she gave the premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s Stabat Mater together with Christian Gerhaher at the Musikfest Berlin and at musica viva, the Bavarian Radio’s concert series for contemporary music; in 2022 she gave the first performance of Mauricio Sotelo’s Cantes antiguos del Flamenco at the Festival de Granada. Her musical work is documented on more than fifty CDs.

Tabea Zimmermann has received several awards for her artistic work both in Germany and abroad. These include the Federal Cross of Merit, the Frankfurt Music Prize, the Hessian Cultural Prize, the Rheingau Music Prize, the International Prize of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, the Paul Hindemith Prize of the City of Hanau and Artist of the Year at the 2017 International Classical Music Awards (ICMA).

Tabea Zimmermann was a professor at the Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’ in Berlin from 2002 to 2023. From the summer term of 2023 she returned to teach at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts.
