Tabea Rothfuchs

Visual artist

The visual artist Tabea Rothfuchs studied audio-visual communication, interactive media and transdisciplinary art in Basel and Zurich. For more than fifteen years she has created film, media scenography and video installations for music theatre, dance, spoken theatre and performance art internationally. Her collaborations have included numerous projects with venues such as the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the MusikTheater an der Wien, Theater Basel, the Frankfurt Opera and the Konzerthaus and Philharmonie in Berlin. She has worked at international theatres and music festivals such as the Copenhagen Opera Festival, the Gstaad Menuhin Festival and the Amman International Theatre Festival in Jordan, and undertook a research trip to the Sinjar District of northern Iraq with the Goethe-Institut.

She has collaborated with directors and artistic collectives such as Bryan Arias, Sebastian Baumgarten, Barbora Horáková, Chris Kondek, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Sebastian Nübling, Lydia Steier, La Fura dels Baus and the Volksbühne Basel.

Her interactive installation Emergence was nominated for the Prix Ars Electronica in 2016. Her dance project 29. May 1913, created for the Hessian State Ballet in collaboration with Bryan Arias as part of the double bill Le Sacre du printemps, received the German theatre award DER FAUST in 2020, in the choreography category.

Since 2020 she has been engaged in artistic research, and in 2021 her book I lost time and space. Where am I? Erzählen von chronischen Schmerzen (I lost time and space. Where am I? Tales of Chronic Illness) was published through the Zurich University of the Arts. The accompanying online version was peer-reviewed and published in Issue 25 (2022) of the Journal for Artistic Research (JAR).

From 2019 to 2021 Tabea Rothfuchs taught performance and spatial video design at Karin Sander’s Chair of Architecture and Art at ETH Zurich. Since 2025 she has been a lecturer in film, spatial video design and media scenography on the Interior Architecture and Scenography degree programme at the Basel Academy of Art and Design.
