Sonja Beißwenger was born in Heilbronn in 1980. After initially studying ethnology, journalism and philosophy in Leipzig, she trained as an actress at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media from 2001 to 2004. Whilst still a student, she was engaged by the Hanover Theatre, and in 2009 she followed Wilfried Schulz to the Dresden State Theatre. She has worked with directors such as Barbara Bürk, Friederike Heller, Andreas Kriegenburg, Nicolas Stemann, Sebastian Baumgarten, Wilfried Minks, Sebastian Nübling, Nuran David Calis, Roger Vontobel and David Bösch. She was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen with the productions Hotel Paraiso by Lutz Hübner, directed by Barbara Bürk, Simon Stephen’s Pornography, directed by Sebastian Nübling, and Schiller’s ‘Don Carlos’ (directed by Roger Vontobel). For her role of Wendla in Frühlings Erwachen!, adapted and directed by Nuran Calis, she was honoured with the Young Talent Award in Hanover, and for her role of Elektra in Sartre’s Fliegen (directed by Andreas Kriegenburg) in Dresden with the Erich Ponto Prize for outstanding artistic achievement. She was engaged at the Salzburg Festival for two consecutive years: 2014 in Horvath’s Don Juan kommt aus dem Krieg (director: Andreas Kriegenburg), 2015 as Polly in Mackie Messer – eine Salzburger Dreigroschenoper directed by Sven-Eric Bechtolf/Julian Crouch.

Sonja Beißwenger has been a freelancer since 2015 and, in addition to her stage work, also works as a speaker and drama teacher.
