Sarah Maria Sun

Sarah Maria Sun is known as one of the foremost vocal performers in the contemporary music scene. Her repertoire currently spans more than 1500 compositions from the 16th to the 21st century, including 350 world premieres.

She regularly performs as a soloist in renowned concert halls and festivals worldwide. For leading opera houses and stages, she has created complex female figures in operas, works of music theatre and monodramas. Her performances as Elsa in Sciarrino’s Lohengrin (Salzburg Easter Festival, 2017) and in Philip Venables’s 4.48 Psychosis (Semperoper Dresden, 2019) were nominated for the accolade of singer of the year by the Opernwelt magazine. From 2007 to 2014, she was the first soprano of the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart.

Sarah Maria Sun’s discography includes more than thirty CDs. Four of her six new releases were nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award in 2017, while her album Modern Lied (Mode Records) won the Coups de Cœur award. In spring 2020, she released more contrasting albums: a recording of Harawi, chant d’amour et de mort by Olivier Messiaen and Killer Instincts, featuring songs by Kurt Weill, Leonard Bernstein, John Kander, Joe Walsh, Randy Newman and Alan Price. The album Les Espaces Électroacoustiques II won the German Record Critics’ Annual Award in 2020.

Sarah Maria Sun is also an illustrator and author of children’s books, and releases songs with the band Titillating Tofu.
