Rufus Didwiszus studied set and costume design in Stuttgart with Jürgen Rose.

Directors and choreographers with whom he has collaborated include Evgeny Titov, Barrie Kosky, Thomas Ostermeier, Christian Spuck, Sasha Waltz and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. He has designed sets for productions such as Káťa Kabanová and Orphée aux enfers at the Salzburg Festival, Winterreise at the Berlin State Ballet, Das Rheingold and Die Walküre at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Le nozze di Figaro and Iolanta at the Vienna State Opera, Manon Lescaut, George Benjamin’s Lessons in Love and Violence, Boris Godunov and La fanciulla del West at the Zurich Opera House, Les Brigands at the Opéra Garnier in Paris, The Queen of Spades and Der Rosenkavalier at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, La Cage aux Folles and Fiddler on the Roof (Anatevka) at the Komische Oper Berlin, Tosca at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, Orlando at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, The Golden Cockerel at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Adelaide Festival, The Sleeping Beauty for Ballett Zürich, Prince Igor at the Opéra Bastille in Paris and Daniel Börtz’s Medea at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm.

Together with the performance artist Joanna Dudley he creates his own music theatre performances and installations, including at the Sophiensaele and the Schaubühne in Berlin and at Bozar in Brussels.

Rufus Didwiszus was named Set Designer of the Year at the 2024 International Opera Awards.
