Biography

Roy Amotz

Born in Jerusalem in 1982, Roy Amotz now lives in Berlin and appears worldwide both as a soloist and as a member of various chamber ensembles. His teachers in Israel included Vladimir Silva, Moshe Epstein, Yossi Arnheim and Avner Biron. At the University of the Arts in Berlin he studied flute and early music with Roswitha Staege and Christophe Hungeburth, graduating with honours.

As a soloist Roy Amotz has appeared with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Matthias Pintscher, among others. His early music engagements include concerts with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and with the Zoom Quartet, with which he won the Biagio-Marini Competition. He has also won first prize at the International Flute Competition in Greece and the Boris Pergamenschikow Prize for Contemporary Music for the John Cage-inspired interactive crossover performance 64 Things Show, which he created with Trio Vis.

For ten years Roy Amotz was a member of the Meitar Ensemble, specializing in contemporary music. He gave regular concerts with them in Israel and at renowned festivals such as the Venice Biennale and ManiFeste in Paris. His collaborations with contemporary composers have led to three flute concertos being composed for him. The most recent was commissioned by the Geneva Camerata, with which group Roy Amotz has been principal flute since 2013, and which performs repertoire from early music to the present day. Amotz is also a founding member of the Tel Aviv Wind Quintet, with which he has given concerts in Israel, Europe, Canada and China, and recorded two albums.

In 2017 Roy Amotz founded the new platform ‘Music and Beyond’, which aims to present classical music in new contexts, creating a transformative experience for audiences and artists. Its first project, Fantasies, is a sensory journey that explores the relationships between our senses from a new perspective, focusing on touching, smelling, tasting and listening. Performances of Fantasies have so far taken place in Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Geneva, Bern, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
