Rainer Honeck

Rainer Honeck was born in 1961 and studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Edith Bertschinger and Alfred Staar.
In 1981 he became a first violin in the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. In 1984 he became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic, where he was appointed concert master in 1992.
Alongside his orchestral duties, Rainer Honeck appears as a soloist at leading music venues in Europe, America and Asia, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
His performance highlights have included solo engagements with the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, under leading conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Semyon Bychkov, Christoph von Dohnányi, Daniele Gatti, Valery Gergiev, Daniel Harding, Manfred Honeck, Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Kirill Petrenko and Michael Tilson Thomas.
As the leader of the Wiener Virtuosen and primarius of Ensemble Wien and the Chamber Orchestra Wien–Berlin he works intensively on chamber music projects.
His extensive experience as a concert master and as a leader of chamber ensembles has led to his being regularly invited to conduct ensembles including the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra and the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra.
His CD recordings include Dvořák’s and Mendelssohn’s violin concertos with the Czech Philharmonic (Pony Canyon), Schubert’s complete works for violin and piano (Studio Frohla) and Mozart’s violin concertos (Orfeo). As concert master of the Vienna Philharmonic, he can be heard in Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben under Christian Thielemann, in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade under Seiji Ozawa and in Beethoven’s Missa solemnis under Riccardo Muti.
