Philippe Giraudeau

Philippe Giraudeau studied dance in La Rochelle and began his career in France before joining the London Contemporary Dance Theatre and Second Stride. He received a London Dance and Performance Award in 1988. In Great Britain he has appeared as an actor and dancer at the National Theatre, the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, the Orange Tree Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre and the ICA Theatre.
Philippe Giraudeau has worked as a choreographer on many opera productions. His work for Tim Albery includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Merry Widow at the Metropolitan Opera, From the House of the Dead and Boris Godunov at the English National Opera and Der fliegende Holländer at Covent Garden. His productions with Robert Carsen include Semele, The Cunning Little Vixen and Káťa Kabanová in Antwerp, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Alcina and Rusalka at the Paris Opéra, Dialogues des Carmélites in Amsterdam, Il trovatore at the Bregenz Festival, Der Rosenkavalier at Covent Garden and the Met, La traviata in Venice, Elektra and Tannhäuser in Tokyo, Manon Lescaut at the Vienna State Opera, Salome in Turin, Iphigénie en Tauride in Chicago, Rinaldo at Glyndebourne, Don Giovanni at La Scala, Milan, L’Amour des trois oranges at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Rigoletto at Aix-en-Provence and Arabella in Zurich.
With Richard Jones he has worked on Jenůfa in Amsterdam and Chicago, Pelléas et Mélisande for Opera North, Martinů’s Juliette at the Paris Opéra, Un ballo in maschera and La bohème at the Bregenz Festival, The Trojans at the English National Opera, The Cunning Little Vixen in Amsterdam and Annie Get Your Gun at the Young Vic in London.
Philippe Giraudeau has also choreographed a number of Antony McDonald’s productions (Aida, Samson et Dalila, Param Vir’s Snatched by the Gods and Broken Strings for Scottish Opera and Bernstein’s Wonderful Town for Grange Park Opera) as well as others for Stephen Langridge (Handel’s Arianna in Creta for the Nederlandse Reisopera, John Lunn’s Tangier Tattoo for Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Otello at the 2008 Salzburg Festival, Birtwistle’s The Minotaur at Covent Garden, La Damnation de Faust in Chicago and Theodora at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées), for John Fulljames (Jonathan Dove’s The Enchanted Pig at the Young Vic and From the House of the Dead for Opera North), for Annabel Arden (La bohème for Welsh National Opera), for Bruno Ravella (La Belle Hélène in Nancy), for Waut Koeken (La Vie parisienne in Strasbourg) and for Benoît Jacquot (La traviata at the Paris Opéra).
He first worked with Rolando Villazón on La traviata at Baden-Baden in 2015 and later on Die Fledermaus at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Platée in Dresden and, most recently, La sonnambula at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
