Peter Rundel

The depth of his approach to complex scores of every style and epoch, coupled with great dramaturgical creativity, has made Peter Rundel one of the most sought after partners for leading European orchestras.
Born in Friedrichshafen, Peter Rundel studied the violin with Igor Ozim and Ramy Shevelov in Cologne, Hanover and New York, as well as studying conducting with Michael Gielen and Peter Eötvös. Composer Jack Brimberg was also one of his mentors in New York. From 1984 until 1996 he was a violinist in Ensemble Modern, to which he remains closely affiliated as a conductor. In the contemporary music world, he has enjoyed long associations with ensemble recherche, the Asko|Schönberg Ensemble and Klangforum Wien. He is also a regular guest with Ensemble intercontemporain and Ensemble Musikfabrik.
Peter Rundel has been artistic director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders, as well as the founding artistic director of the Kammerakademie Potsdam, and he was appointed artistic director of the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música in Porto in January 2005.
He is regularly invited to conduct the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne and he continues his close collaboration with the SWR Symphony Orchestra. His guest appearances in 2016/17 include the Orchestre National de Lille, the Brussels Philharmonic, the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale in Florence, the Orchestra del Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and the German Radio Philharmonic in Saarbrücken-Kaiserslautern.
Peter Rundel has conducted operas at the Bavarian State Opera, the Wiener Festwochen, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Bregenz Festival and the Schwetzinger SWR Festival, where his work also includes traditional repertoire and groundbreaking contemporary music theatre productions.
Peter Rundel has been awarded many prizes for his recordings of 20th-century music, including the prestigious German Record Critics Prize, the Grand Prix du Disque, the Echo Klassik Award and a Grammy Award nomination.
