The Australian-born choreographer and director Paul Blackman is celebrated for his bold, physically intensive and emotionally resonant work in the fields of contemporary dance and opera. Currently based in Athens, he is co-director of JUKSTA, an interdisciplinary ensemble rooted in contemporary dance theatre, which is known for its visually striking productions.

Paul Blackman’s choreography and stagings have featured at leading international opera houses and renowned festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, La Scala, Milan, the Vienna State Opera, Theater Kiel and the Vienna Konzerthaus, as well as the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron).

He has worked with leading European directors and theatre-makers, such as Jan Lauwers, Matthias Hartmann, Ulrich Rasche, Alexandra Liedtke, Jozef Fruček, Linda Kapetanea and Jasmin Vardimon, contributing to productions noted for their innovative integration of choreography and theatrical narrative.

Alongside his work in opera and theatre, Paul Blackman has created dance pieces for companies such as the dance company of Göteborg Opera, the St Gallen Dance Company and the Needcompany, and for the National Theatre in Mannheim. His choreography has featured at venues and festivals such as the Venice Biennale, Sadler’s Wells in London, the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Athens Epidaurus Festival.

Paul Blackman regularly gives international masterclasses and workshops to train and mentor the next generation of performers and choreographers.
